Funding For Chartists

A £39,100 FUNDING boost is set to see the creation of an interactive exhibition about the Chartists. Launched in 2000, the Nantyglo and Blaina Charter Group have set up shop in Blaina’s Salem Chapel as they attempt to educate and keep the legacy of the Chartist movement in Blaenau Gwent alive. Now a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) will allow a new interactive exhibition to be created in the chapel. It will aim to make the most of the group’s existing resources alongside new items of interest supplied by the community promoting the Blaina area’s heritage, including the story of Chartism, the Blaina riots, scotch cattle and the history of Salem chapel. Charter Group Chairman Garth Collier said: “The new exhibition will be a great asset to the Charter Group, the town and local tourism. “We will be working with local people over the next few months to gather stories, copy documents and photographs and recruit new volunteers to make the exhibition a real community effort.” Jennifer Stewart, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Wales, said: “Nantyglo and Blaina has a long and proud history of Chartism. “We are really pleased that we are able to help the Nantyglo and Blaina Charter Group with their aim of getting more people involved and aware of the important history of the area,” she added.
